Quillan
Science North Bluecoats and visitors are mourning the loss of a great animal ambassador. On November 14, 2016, Quillan the porcupine passed away in his habitat during the night. Quillan was 14 years old, and has been at Science North since he was just a baby.
Quillan has been instrumental on the Northern Ecosystems floor, teaching everyone about porcupine biology and behaviour. Because of him, most Sudburians now know that porcupines can’t actually shoot their quills. His friendly and curious nature allowed many visitors to have hands-on interactions with him.
Quillan will be greatly missed, and forever remembered fondly by everyone. He will be cremated and his ashes spread in his favourite walking places on the Science North grounds, outside the third floor.
Science North welcomes everyone to share with us your pictures, experiences, drawing and memories by emailing them in to [email protected], or come see us on the Third Floor, so we can celebrate this phenomenal animal ambassador together.
Awe!!! Poor Quilian I’m so sorry for the Centres loss especially those who cared for him first hand (Meaghan M) . He had a great life!
He certainly touched us all. Thanks for your condolences, we appreciate all the support from friends of Science North.
I worked as a bluecoat with Quillan 14 years ago when we had first arrived at Science North and have so many great memories taking him for walks in the science center and outside and laughing as he was always getting himself into some kind of trouble 🙂
We were so lucky to have known him all these years! Thanks for all the care you gave him Nicole, you were certainly one of his favourite Bluecoats! - Amy Henson
I’m sad to hear about Quillan. He will be missed at the centre! I’m thankful for all the memories of our favourite stubborn Quillan hiding out in the Discovery Theatre while I was gearing up for shows! He was a great ambassador!
Thanks Andrea! We will miss him lots!
